Emmanuel: God With Us—Now and Forever

The wonder of Christmas is not merely the arrival of a child but the arrival of God Himself. Emmanuel—God with us—signals the most profound truth of the gospel: that in Christ, heaven has come to earth, and the Creator has entered His creation to dwell among His people. This truth is not meant to remain distant or academic but to permeate every facet of our daily lives.

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us” (Matthew 1:23, KJV).

Richard Sibbes, a Puritan known for his tender preaching, called this reality the “Miracle of Miracles” and reminded believers of its rich, practical applications.

God With Us in Love

When Jesus took on human nature, He forever united Himself with us in love. Sibbes poignantly reminds us that if God is with us, “who shall be against us?” (Romans 8:31, BSB). The Incarnation guarantees that God and His people are eternally reconciled. Christ’s humanity assures us that He is our elder Brother and our divine Bridegroom, preserving everlasting union and peace between God and us.

Because God is with us, we need not fear a breach in this relationship. Our Advocate stands in heaven, representing us before the Father. The love that sent Him to earth will never fail, for it is as unchanging as the God who promised it.

God With Us in Suffering

Sibbes also draws out the comfort of Emmanuel for our troubles. He reminds us that Jesus entered our poverty and bore our infirmities, making Him intimately acquainted with human sorrow (Isaiah 53:4). Whatever affliction we face—whether it be disgrace, inner conflict, or the terrors of a wounded conscience—we can rest in the truth that our Savior is with us.

Hebrews 4:15 tells us, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin” (BSB). Emmanuel means that in every trial, Jesus not only understands but walks beside us, offering His strength and comfort.

God With Us in Death

One of the most profound comforts of Emmanuel is found in the face of death. Sibbes encourages believers to cling to the sweetness of this Name when the grave looms near. Death is no longer a terror for those in Christ, for Emmanuel has already gone before us. As Paul writes, “O death, where is your victory? O grave, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55, BSB).

Because God is with us, death is not the end. Emmanuel promises that He will bring us from the dust and into eternal glory. His presence ensures that nothing—not even death—can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:38-39).

Living in the Reality of Emmanuel

The name Emmanuel is not just a title; it is a declaration of God’s unwavering commitment to His people. This truth must shape the way we live, for Emmanuel is not merely with us in the abstract but in the concrete realities of life. In every joy and sorrow, in every triumph and failure, in life and in death, God is with us.

Let this truth anchor your heart today and every day. Rejoice in the reality that Christ’s presence is not temporary but eternal. The One who came as Emmanuel over 2,000 years ago is still with us, and He will remain with us forever.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1, BSB).

May the reality of Emmanuel fill your heart with peace, comfort, and joy, both now and forevermore. Amen.
