Broken – A Thought for Christmas

Has this ever happened to you? A carefully chosen Christmas gift, wrapped and placed under the tree, waits to bring joy. Whether it’s a gift you’ve bought for someone else or one you eagerly anticipate receiving, the excitement builds as the day draws near. But when the moment comes, the paper is torn away, the box opened… and the gift is broken. Somewhere between its purchase and its unveiling, something went wrong. Disappointment floods in, and sometimes even tears—both for the giver and the recipient.

Christmas is a season full of high expectations, isn’t it?

Along with the excitement, there’s often a fair share of stress and pressure. And in the intensity of it all, cracks in our relationships can become more obvious. Tensions that we managed to patch over during the year suddenly surface, and the fractures we hoped would stay hidden are painfully revealed. Arguments break out, sadness lingers, and we’re reminded of a difficult truth: we are all broken.

We long to love others as we should, but we don’t know how. Even when we want to love well, we often fail. Our brokenness isn’t just relational; it runs deep within us, touching every part of our lives.

But here’s the beauty of Christmas: God sent His Son into our broken world—not to avoid its brokenness, but to heal it. Jesus came to dwell among us, living in the midst of our pain, yet never succumbing to it. He offers hope to the fractured, the weary, and the wounded. The Bible tells us that He came to bind up the brokenhearted and bring healing to the shattered places in our lives.

How did He do this?

By surrendering Himself to be broken for us. On the cross, Jesus bore our sin and took the weight of our brokenness upon Himself. But the story doesn’t end there. On the other side of that sorrow stands the empty tomb. The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate declaration of victory over sin and death. Through His risen life, He pours out forgiveness and healing into the hearts of those who trust Him.

Christmas reminds us that the answer to our brokenness isn’t found in perfect gifts, flawless celebrations, or even patched-up relationships. The answer is found in Jesus—the one who was broken so that we might be made whole.

This Christmas, may you find peace in the truth that your brokenness isn’t the end of the story. There is forgiveness, there is healing, and there is hope in the risen Savior. Trust Him, for He is the Lord of life, the one who makes all things new.

Wishing you a Christmas filled with the hope and joy of Christ.
