The Boldness of Quiet Faith

Introduction:
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were unlikely figures to show devotion to Jesus after His crucifixion. Previously quiet about their faith, they courageously stepped forward to care for His body when others had fled. Their actions challenge us to live out our faith boldly, even in the face of fear or opposition.

Scripture:
“Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.”
—John 19:38-40 (NLT)

Reflection:
Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus both risked much by publicly honoring Jesus after His death. Joseph, a wealthy member of the Sanhedrin, had been a secret follower of Jesus due to fear of the Jewish leaders. Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus under the cover of night (John 3:1-2), also stepped into the light of faith by bringing a lavish amount of burial spices. Together, they lovingly prepared Jesus’ body for burial, an act of devotion that demonstrated their newfound boldness.

Their actions are significant in several ways. First, they fulfilled prophecy, as Isaiah 53:9 foretold that the Messiah would be buried in a rich man’s tomb. Second, they showed that faith is not about grand speeches or public recognition but about obedience and devotion, even when it comes at a cost. By associating themselves with Jesus, they risked their reputations, positions, and safety.

Their quiet yet bold faith challenges us to move beyond passive belief to active discipleship. Just as Joseph and Nicodemus honored Jesus in a time of despair, we are called to stand for Him even when it is inconvenient or risky.

Application:

  1. Step Out in Faith: Are there areas in your life where you’ve been hesitant to declare your faith openly? Ask God for the courage to live boldly for Him.
  2. Honor Jesus in Your Actions: Like Joseph and Nicodemus, demonstrate your faith through acts of love, generosity, and devotion.
  3. Trust God in Risky Situations: When standing for Christ might cost you something—reputation, comfort, or acceptance—trust that He is worth it.
  4. Encourage Fellow Believers: Support and stand with others who are taking bold steps in their faith journey.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of Joseph and Nicodemus, who honored You with boldness and love. Forgive me for the times I have kept my faith hidden out of fear or convenience. Give me courage to stand for You, no matter the cost. Help me to honor You in both word and deed, trusting that You are worth everything. In Your name, Amen.
