“Therefore I exult in Christ Jesus in my service to God.” (Romans 15:17, BSB)
The Apostle Paul’s declaration in Romans 15:17 offers a glimpse into the heart of a servant captivated by the glory of Christ. His joy is not rooted in personal achievements or the accolades of others but in the work of Christ through him. What does it mean to “exult in Christ Jesus” in our service to God? It is a call to find our deepest joy and satisfaction in the Lord’s faithfulness, even as we labor for His kingdom.
A Heart Anchored in Grace
Paul’s ministry was an outpouring of grace. He did not see his work as the result of his own strength or abilities. Instead, he recognized that every step, every word, every victory came from God. This awareness brought him great joy because his labor was not in vain—it was empowered by Christ and carried out for His glory.
His joy reminds us of the words in Philippians 3:3, where Paul declares that believers “boast in Christ Jesus and place no confidence in the flesh.” This kind of boasting is not arrogance but gratitude and awe at the Lord’s enabling grace. Serving Christ becomes a delight when we remember that He is the source of our strength and the purpose of our efforts.
A Model for Others to Follow
Paul’s example of exulting in Christ extends beyond personal devotion; he also invited others to imitate him. “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1, BSB), he urged. This was not a statement of pride but of discipleship. His life was a living reflection of Christ’s love, patience, and humility.
This call to imitation challenges us to examine our own lives. Are we so rooted in Christ that others see Him in us? Can we confidently say, “Follow me as I follow Christ”? To do so requires more than a surface-level commitment. It demands that we live intentionally, walking in the Spirit and letting our words and deeds align with the gospel.
Joy in Suffering and Service
Paul’s joy was not diminished by hardship; rather, it was magnified. He understood that even his trials were opportunities to glorify Christ. In Galatians 6:14, Paul proclaims, “Far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” His joy was inseparable from the reality of the cross—a symbol of both suffering and triumph.
This perspective is essential for us today. Serving Christ often involves challenges: unmet expectations, fatigue, or even opposition. Yet, when we remember that our labor is grounded in His grace and aimed at His glory, our burdens become opportunities for worship. Like Paul, we can find joy not in the absence of difficulty but in the presence of Christ.
A Transforming Truth
As you consider Paul’s words, reflect on your own service to God. Do you rejoice in the power of Christ at work in you, or do you feel weighed down by the demands of ministry? Paul’s testimony reminds us that the true joy of serving Christ comes not from our strength but from His sufficiency. He enables us, sustains us, and ultimately brings fruit from our labor.
1 Thessalonians 1:6-7 provides a beautiful example of this truth. Paul praises the Thessalonians for becoming imitators of him and of the Lord, noting that their joy in the Spirit inspired others. This joy is contagious, drawing others to Christ and encouraging fellow believers.
A Call to Worship
Rejoicing in Christ transforms service into worship. As we exult in Him, we declare with our lives that He is worthy of all praise. Whether we serve in our homes, workplaces, or churches, the posture of our hearts matters. Let us serve with gladness, knowing that He is faithful to complete the work He has begun in us (Philippians 1:6).
May your joy in Christ grow as you serve, and may your life reflect the One who is the source of all true joy. With every step of faith, every act of love, and every word of encouragement, may you exult in Christ Jesus, who alone is worthy.
