Be Still

Introduction
In a world of constant motion and endless noise, the call to “be still” feels almost counterintuitive. Yet, it is in stillness that we find clarity, peace, and a deeper connection to God. Being still is not about inactivity but about trust and surrender to the One who holds all things together.

Scripture
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” — Psalm 46:10 (NLT)

Reflection
Psalm 46:10 invites us to pause and recognize God’s sovereignty. The command to “be still” is not merely a suggestion for rest; it is an act of faith. In the chaos of life, stillness is the acknowledgment that God is in control, that His plans are perfect, and that He is worthy of our worship.

This verse is set against the backdrop of turmoil and upheaval described earlier in the psalm. While nations rage and kingdoms fall, the psalmist reminds us that God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). He is not only present but actively working for His glory and our good, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Other passages reinforce this truth. Isaiah 30:15 says, “In quietness and confidence is your strength.” This highlights the power of resting in God rather than striving in our own effort. Similarly, Jesus, during a storm, demonstrated the peace of His authority when He commanded, “Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39). In every storm—physical or metaphorical—He remains in control.

Stillness is not passive; it is the active practice of trusting God, waiting on Him, and aligning our hearts with His. It allows us to listen for His voice, remember His promises, and surrender our anxieties to Him.

Application

  • Pause for Reflection: Set aside time each day to sit quietly before God, free from distractions.
  • Trust in His Sovereignty: Release your need to control outcomes and place your trust in God’s timing and plan.
  • Meditate on His Word: Use moments of stillness to reflect on Scripture, allowing it to guide your thoughts and refresh your soul.

References

  • Exodus 14:14: “The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”
  • Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Prayer
Lord God, in the midst of life’s chaos, teach me to be still and know that You are God. Help me to trust in Your sovereignty and rest in Your presence. Quiet my anxious heart and remind me that You are in control. May my stillness be an act of worship, honoring You as my refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
