The Certainties That Shape My Life

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Through His Word, He has given us anchor points that steady the soul, certainties upon which the whole of life can rest. In 1 Peter 1:3-5, the Apostle Peter outlines three truths that are not mere possibilities, but unshakable realities for all who are in Christ. These truths have defined my past, guide my present, and secure my future. They are not of my own making or effort but are gifts of God’s grace, ensuring that my life is eternally bound to Him.

My past is defined by God’s mercy. Peter begins, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again” (1 Peter 1:3a, BSB). This is the foundation of my life: I was a sinner, utterly lost and unable to save myself. But God, rich in mercy, reached down to me. He caused me to be born again, not because of anything I had done, but because of His own great love and grace. This is the work of God alone. As Paul reminds us, “so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus” (1 Corinthians 1:29-30, NASB). My past is not marked by merit but by mercy.

In the present, my life is shaped around a living hope. Peter goes on to say that we are born again “to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3b, BSB). This hope is not wishful thinking or uncertain longing; it is a living reality grounded in the finished work of Christ. Because Jesus rose from the dead, my hope is alive and active, transforming how I see the world and live each day. This hope sustains me in trials, strengthens me in weakness, and assures me that no matter what comes, Christ’s resurrection has secured my present peace and future joy. How does this living hope speak to you today? Does it reshape your perspective and provide stability amid life’s uncertainties?

Looking ahead, my future is guaranteed by an inheritance beyond imagination. Peter declares, “to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4, BSB). This inheritance is not like earthly treasures that decay or fade with time. It is kept safe by God Himself, untouched by sin or corruption. This certainty steadies my heart, reminding me that my ultimate reward is not in this life but in the presence of God, where fullness of joy and eternal pleasures await (Psalm 16:11).

The guarantee of these truths rests not on my strength but on God’s power. Peter assures us that we “are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Peter 1:5, BSB). This protection is not fragile or fleeting; it is the almighty power of God securing my salvation until the day it is fully revealed. This truth humbles me and fills me with gratitude. It is not my grip on God that keeps me safe but His steadfast hold on me.

These certainties—mercy in my past, hope in my present, and an inheritance in my future—are not my accomplishments. They are God’s gifts of grace. They call forth praise, not boasting in myself but in the Lord. As Paul so powerfully states, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD” (1 Corinthians 1:31, NASB). This is my song: not of self but of the Savior. Amen.

This a great and yet challenging (is why its great) article. It is so easy to fall into the drive your car in the garage shut it and get comfy. This is never the way taking Christ from the neighborhoods to the nations.
