The Sure Word of God

Hints for the Preacher and Teacher

In a world of broken promises and shifting opinions, the believer stands upon the unshakable foundation of the sure Word of God. Scripture is not merely a collection of human ideas about God—it is God’s own Word, breathed out by Him, revealing His heart, His promises, His commands, and His power. Let us quietly trace the reasons why His Word is so sure, so worthy of our trust, and so necessary for our souls.

First, the Word of God is sure because of what it is.

The Lord Himself declares,

“So will My word be that goes out from My mouth—it will not return to Me empty—but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.” (Isaiah 55:11, BSB).

It is His Word because He is its Author, because it reveals Himself through it, and because it carries His message directly to us. No human hand can alter it, and no earthly power can destroy it.

Second, the Word of God is sure because of what it promises.

Jehovah said to Jeremiah,

“You have seen correctly, for I am watching over My word to accomplish it.” (Jeremiah 1:12, BSB).

Every promise of God is a pledge, written and signed by His own hand, payable to the one who believes. Faith is the hand that cashes the check, and communion with Him is the joy of its reward.

Third, it is sure because of what it does.

“Is not My word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that smashes a rock?” (Jeremiah 23:29, BSB).

The Word burns away dross in the heart of the saint and brings warmth, life, and zeal. But it also scorches the sinner, exposing and consuming all that stands against the holiness of God.

Fourth, it is sure because of what it commands.

God spoke to Solomon,

“If you walk in My statutes and carry out My ordinances and keep all My commandments by walking in them, then I will establish My word with you.” (1 Kings 6:12, BSB).

God’s commands are never burdens without blessing. Obedience to His precepts opens the way for the fulfillment of His pledges. His promises walk hand in hand with His commands.

Fifth, it is sure because of what it reveals.

Jesus says,

“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24, BSB).

The Word reveals the heart of God, sending Christ for our salvation. It tells of life eternal, the passing from death to life, the full assurance of no condemnation to those who believe.

Sixth, it is sure because of what it contains.

Christ repeatedly refers to His teaching as “My Word” (John 5:24; 8:31, 37, 43; Revelation 3:8, 10).

Everything Christ has said—every declaration, every invitation, every warning—is the very Word of God. His Word contains all we need for life, godliness, and eternal hope.

Seventh, it is sure because of what His Words impart.

Ponder these rich promises:

  • Reliability: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.” (Matthew 24:35, BSB).
  • Life: “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63, BSB).
  • Salvation: “If anyone hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him… the word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.” (John 12:47–48, BSB).
  • Revelation: “The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own authority. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.” (John 14:10, BSB).
  • Presence: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” (John 14:23, BSB).
  • Answered Prayer: “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7, BSB).

O believer, cherish His Word! Feed your soul upon it, build your life upon it, and anchor your hope in it.

For His Word is sure, steadfast, living, and filled with grace and truth.

“Believe His words,

His words are life and beauty,

His words command thy duty,

Believe His words.”

For further thought, consider:

Psalm 119:89“Your word, O LORD, is everlasting; it is firmly fixed in the heavens.”

Matthew 7:24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
