In a world that shifts and shakes under the weight of uncertainty, how precious are the “sure things” that God sets before His people! The Christian life is not built on wishful thinking or fragile hopes, but upon the steadfast and unchanging realities of God’s Word, God’s work, and God’s promises. Let us walk through these beautiful certainties that anchor the soul.
First, we rejoice in a Sure Revelation in God’s Word.
Peter affirms,
“And we have the more certain word of the prophets, which you would do well to heed as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2 Peter 1:19, BSB).
The Scriptures do not waver or mislead. They shine as a lamp in the darkness, revealing the way of life with certainty until Christ Himself returns.
Second, we stand upon a Sure Promise to Faith.
Paul writes,
“Therefore the promise comes by faith, so that it may rest on grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring.” (Romans 4:16, BSB).
Because the promise rests on grace—not merit—it is sure and unshakable. Faith receives what grace has freely given, and God’s promise holds firm for all who believe.
Third, we are called to a Sure Election and Calling.
Peter exhorts,
“Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things, you will never stumble.” (2 Peter 1:10, BSB).
By adding to our faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love, we confirm that we truly belong to Christ. The life that grows in grace bears witness to a sure calling.
Fourth, we are given a Sure Confidence.
Hebrews reminds us,
“For we have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end the assurance we had at first.” (Hebrews 3:14, BSB).
The word translated “steadfast” here is closely tied to “sure.” Our confidence in Christ is not a passing feeling but a perseverance grounded in His finished work.
Fifth, we hold to a Sure Anchor of Hope.
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” (Hebrews 6:19, BSB).
The Christian’s hope is not drifting aimlessly; it is anchored within the veil, tethered to Christ Himself, who sits at the right hand of God as our eternal High Priest.
Sixth, we cling to a Sure Hold.
“But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast.” (Hebrews 3:6, BSB).
To “hold fast” is to grip tightly the confidence and joy found in the Gospel, refusing to let go even when trials attempt to pry it from our grasp.
Seventh, we rest in a Sure Trust.
Paul expresses his heart to the Corinthians, saying,
“And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you will share in our comfort.” (2 Corinthians 1:7, BSB).
The word “firm” here again carries the same meaning as “sure.” Our trust is steadfast because it is grounded not in human faithfulness, but in the unwavering mercy and comfort of God.
Dear friend, these are the sure things that God gives to His children—realities stronger than the storms of life, deeper than the shifting sands of this present world.
Are you resting today in what is sure?
Are you clinging to His Word, anchored by His promises, strengthened by His steadfast love?
For deeper meditation, consider:
Isaiah 28:16 – “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will never be shaken.”
2 Timothy 2:19 – “Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ‘The Lord knows those who are His.’”
