The Christian life is not a stagnant pond, but a flowing river, a living journey that begins with new birth and moves onward toward deeper fellowship with Christ. Scripture maps out for us certain key steps along the way—markers of genuine faith and growth. Let us consider these beautiful stages that guide and nourish the soul that seeks to walk with God.
First, the Christian life begins by receiving Christ.
John 1:12 (BSB) declares,
“But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
No true Christian life can begin apart from personally receiving Jesus Christ—welcoming Him not merely as a historical figure or teacher, but as Lord, Savior, and Friend. It is by trusting Him alone that we are born into the family of God.
Second, there follows confession of Him.
Paul writes in Romans 10:10 (BSB),
“For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved.”
True faith is not a secret to be hidden away; it is a light to be spoken and lived openly. The heart believes, and the lips proclaim. Confession is the outward sign of inward grace.
Third, we are called to abide in Him.
Jesus teaches,
“Abide in Me, and I will abide in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine.” (John 15:4, BSB).
Abiding means living in constant dependence, communion, and trust. The life of fruitfulness flows only from remaining near to Christ day by day.
Fourth, the believer must follow after Him.
Jesus sets the cost plainly:
“If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23, BSB).
Following Christ is no easy stroll—it is the way of self-denial, sacrifice, and daily surrender. Yet it is the path that leads to life abundant and eternal.
Fifth, we are called to fidelity to Him.
In Revelation 3:10 (BSB), Jesus commends the church at Philadelphia:
“Because you have kept My command to endure with patience, I will also keep you from the hour of testing.”
Fidelity to Christ means persevering faithfulness in the face of trials, temptations, and the subtle enticements of a world that calls us to compromise.
Sixth, there is service for Him.
Paul urges believers,
“Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” (Romans 12:11, BSB).
The Christian life is not lived out in passive observation. It is a life of active service—joyful, tireless, fervent labor in the vineyard of our Master, motivated by love and fueled by grace.
Seventh, and sweetest of all, we move into fellowship with Him.
Paul expresses this longing in Philippians 3:10 (BSB):
“I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death.”
Christianity is not primarily about duty or doctrine—it is about knowing Christ, sharing in His life, His sufferings, His triumphs. It is a living, breathing relationship with the risen Lord.
Each of these steps builds upon the other. Receiving leads to confession, confession to abiding, abiding to following, following to faithfulness, faithfulness to serving, and serving to sweet, deepening fellowship.
How far along are you, dear friend, in these steps of grace?
Which step calls you today to take a further stride of trust and obedience?
For further meditation, consider:
Colossians 2:6 – “Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him.”
2 Peter 3:18 – “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
