Draw Closer

"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." James 4:8

From the opening garden of Genesis to the radiant vision of Revelation, Scripture reveals a God who walks—not aloof, not in abstraction, but near. He is not a distant deity, watching from heaven’s remote balconies. No, He is the God who walks among His people—intimately, attentively, and redemptively. Every step He takes speaks something of His character and intent. Each instance of His walk in Scripture becomes a holy invitation: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8, BSB).

The Almighty Deliverer

The first portrait we must behold is that of the delivering God. In the days of Moses, the Lord promised His presence in the camp of Israel: “For the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp to deliver you and to give your enemies over to you” (Deuteronomy 23:14, BSB). What a staggering comfort! The camp, with all its dust, imperfections, and vulnerability, was not forsaken. God walked in its midst. He didn’t send merely angels or signs—He came Himself. And He came to deliver. The same is true today: our battles are not ours alone. His nearness is our strength, and His presence ensures our perseverance.

The Arresting Reprover

But His walk is not only for rescue—it is also for reproof. After Adam and Eve had sinned, they heard “the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (Genesis 3:8, BSB). What a scene. The very One who had walked in fellowship now walks in confrontation—but not in fury. His steps are not thundering in wrath but whispering in sorrow. He comes not to crush, but to call. Even in judgment, His mercy moves first. His walk toward the guilty is a foreshadow of grace, preparing the way for a greater redemption to come.

The Loving Sustainer

Fast forward to Babylon. Three faithful men are cast into the fiery furnace. Yet Nebuchadnezzar sees a fourth: “The fourth is like a son of the gods” (Daniel 3:25, BSB). There, in the fire, the Lord walks again. He does not merely observe their trial from a safe distance—He steps into it. He walks the flame with them. And still today, He walks through every sorrow with His people. His loving presence may not always prevent the fire, but it promises we will not walk it alone. “When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched” (Isaiah 43:2, BSB).

The Opportune Succorer

On another occasion, the disciples are tossed by waves and wind—afraid, exhausted, unsure if they will survive the night. And then, “Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” (Matthew 14:25, BSB). What a scene: the very thing that threatened to destroy them became the surface upon which He walked. He does not merely calm the storm—He walks over it to reach us. He is never late, never hindered, and never overwhelmed. The One who helps comes walking—deliberate, timely, sovereign.

The Minute Searcher

John’s vision in Revelation reveals yet another walk: “He walks among the seven golden lampstands” (Revelation 2:1, BSB), a symbol of His churches. He walks with searching precision. His eyes, like flames of fire, penetrate to the depths of every congregation and every soul. He knows our works. He knows our hearts. He encourages, corrects, warns, and calls us to repentance—not from afar, but from within our midst. He is not absent from the Church; He is intimately present, and He will not be ignored.

The Holy Example

And yet His walk is not only for our observation—it is for our imitation. “Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked” (1 John 2:6, BSB). His footsteps are not too high to follow. In humility, in obedience, in compassion, in prayer—He left us an example. We do not walk to earn salvation, but we walk because we belong to Him. His Spirit within us enables the same walk He once trod on earth. And what a privilege it is to walk in His steps.

The Supreme Exceller

Finally, the psalmist lifts our eyes to a higher place: “He makes the clouds His chariot; He walks upon the wings of the wind” (Psalm 104:3, BSB). He is not confined to the earth. His rule is over heaven and nature, wind and wave. His majesty surpasses every earthly throne. And yet, this same exalted God stoops to walk with the lowly. The One who walks on the winds also walks in the furnace. The One who rides the heavens also walks beside His bride.

So then, dear soul, what will you do with this walking God?

Do you recognize His footsteps in your life? Are you listening for His gentle stride in the cool of the day? Do you follow His pace, or run ahead and fall behind? Do you welcome His presence in the midst of your trials, or have you forgotten He walks the fire with you?

He still walks among His people. In correction, in comfort, in power, in peace. And one day, those who walk with Him here will walk with Him in white (Revelation 3:4, BSB).

“Enoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24, BSB). May the same be said of us—that we walked closely with the One who first walked toward us in grace.
