The Power of His Name

The name of Jesus is no mere title; it carries with it the full weight of His person, His work, and His authority. In the early chapters of Acts, we see how the power of His name shapes the life of the Church and the hope of the world. Every promise, every healing, every proclamation rises and falls upon the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Let us ponder these seven glorious truths about the power of His name.

Hints for Teachers

First, His name brings promise. Peter proclaims on the day of Pentecost, “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Acts 2:21, BSB). Salvation is not earned; it is received by calling upon His name in faith. No one who cries out to Jesus is turned away. His name is the doorway into the riches of God’s mercy.

Secondly, His name secures pardon. “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38, BSB). In His name, sins are washed away. In His name, the guilty are made clean. The water of baptism bears outward witness to the inward cleansing made possible only through His sacrifice.

Third, His name grants power. Peter, standing before the lame man at the temple gate, declares, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk” (Acts 3:6, BSB). And the man, crippled from birth, leaps to his feet. The name of Jesus is no empty phrase—it carries divine authority to heal, to restore, to set free.

Fourth, His name brings perfection. Later, Peter explains, “By faith in His name, this man whom you see and know was made strong; it is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given him complete healing in your presence” (Acts 3:16, BSB). Not partial healing, not a temporary remedy, but perfect soundness—body and soul touched by the fullness of Christ’s power.

Fifth, His name is the center of proclamation. When questioned by the authorities, Peter boldly states, “Let it be known to all of you… that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands before you healthy” (Acts 4:10, BSB). The apostles were not proclaiming a new philosophy or a better way of life—they were heralding a Person, risen and reigning.

Sixth, His name provides provision for our greatest need. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12, BSB). There are not many roads to God. There is one name, one Savior, one way—and that way is Jesus Christ. In His name alone is salvation offered to a perishing world.

Seventh, His name is the ground of prayer. The early Church prayed, “Stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus” (Acts 4:30, BSB). All their petitions, all their boldness, all their hope in prayer were anchored in His name. Even today, when we pray in His name, we plead His merit, His righteousness, His authority before the throne of grace.

The name of Jesus is a treasure inexhaustible, a fortress unassailable, a fountain inexhaustible. How precious is His name to you? Is it the name you call upon in need, the name you rest upon for forgiveness, the name you proclaim to others, the name that fills your prayers?

For further meditation, consider:

Philippians 2:9–11 – “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

John 14:13 – “And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
