And Yet True

John 14:6 (BSB) declares,
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’”

These words stand like a mountain peak in the landscape of Scripture—unmoving, unyielding, and glorious. Here, Jesus does not offer a suggestion. He gives a declaration. He does not say, “I know the way,” or “I teach the truth,” or “I bring life.” He says, “I am.” The way. The truth. The life.

And yet, how scandalous this sounds to the world. Even in His day, He was called a deceiver (John 7:12), a blasphemer, one who led the people astray. Men scoffed, authorities plotted, and the crowds grew confused. They murmured and divided over Him. Some rejected Him outright. Others tried to reduce Him to a mere teacher or prophet. But He could not be explained away—because He was not only true, He is the Truth.

When He says “I am the way,” He is saying, “There is no other path to God—not religion, not ritual, not self-effort.” When He says “I am the truth,” He means that all other claims must bow before Him. He is not a truth among many. He is the truth—perfect, holy, unchanging. And when He says “I am the life,” He is telling us that apart from Him, all that appears alive is dead at the root. He alone gives eternal life because He alone has conquered death.

This is why He could be slandered as a deceiver, and yet true (2 Corinthians 6:8). Though falsely accused, misunderstood, and maligned, the truth of who He is never shifted. He remained faithful, steady, unwavering. And for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, He still is.

And we must be careful here. For many today want a Jesus who is kind, compassionate, even miraculous—but not exclusive. Yet here He draws a line with love and firmness: “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” That is not cruelty. That is clarity. There is one door, but it is open. One road, but it is marked by mercy.

Have you come through that way? Are you walking in that truth, resting in that life? Or have you tried to find a different route—one of your own making?

Jesus is still the way for the wanderer, the truth for the confused, and the life for the dead in sin. This is not arrogance—it is grace. He offers what no other can give, because He is what no other can be. And though the world may scorn, though many may call Him narrow, we echo the words of Paul: as deceivers, and yet true.
