Before All Things

John begins his Gospel not with a genealogy, a birth, or an angelic announcement, but with eternity. His first words echo the opening lines of Genesis: “In the beginning…”—yet he reaches further back than creation. Before time began, before light or life filled the world, the Word was.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, BSB)

This Word—Logos in the Greek—is not an idea or principle, but a Person. He is not just with God; He is God. And yet the Word remains distinct from the Father, “with God” and yet fully sharing in the divine nature. These few words sweep us into the mystery of the Trinity. Christ is not a created being, nor a spiritual intermediary. He is eternal, unmade, ever-existent. There never was a time when He was not.

John writes, “He was with God in the beginning.” (John 1:2, BSB) That means everything that is true of God is true of the Word. This changes how we view Christ entirely. The Child in the manger is the Ancient of Days. The Carpenter of Nazareth is the uncreated Light who stood outside of time, whose voice spoke the cosmos into being.

The Word Is Creator of All

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:3, BSB)

This is not mere poetry. John is declaring that Jesus Christ is the very agent of creation. The world was not only spoken by God, it was spoken through the Word. He was there before the first sunrise, before the stars were hung, before the sea kissed the shore. Everything that exists—every molecule, every mountain, every heartbeat—owes its being to Him.

He did not emerge from creation. He authored it. And that includes you and me. The One who fashioned the galaxies also designed your soul. Your existence is not random; it is rooted in the will of the Word. Colossians 1:17 affirms this, saying, “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Have you ever paused to thank Jesus—not only as Savior but as Creator? Have you considered how dependent your every breath is upon Him? That you woke up this morning because He willed it so? It’s not just the miracle of salvation we owe to Him, but the miracle of existence.

The Life and Light That Triumphs

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4–5, BSB)

This life John speaks of is not just biological. It is divine life—eternal, spiritual, soul-igniting. In Christ is the origin of life and the fullness of it. And that life is also light—illumination, truth, purity, and joy. In a dark world, it is Christ who reveals what is true and good and holy.

And this Light does not merely glow—it shines. It pierces. It presses forward. It refuses to be swallowed by the shadows of sin, fear, or death. Though the darkness rages, it cannot prevail. It tried once at Calvary. The skies darkened. The Son gave up His spirit. But even death could not hold the Light. The tomb could not contain the Word.

Today, that Light still shines—unfading, undiminished. It shines in the face of Christ and now through His people. “You are light in the Lord,” Paul says in Ephesians 5:8. That means we are not only recipients of the Light but vessels of it. And in a world dimmed by confusion and brokenness, what could be more needed?

So, how does this truth meet you today? Are you walking in the Light, or shrinking from it? Have you welcomed the life that only Christ—the eternal Word—can give?

In the end, John is not offering a theory, but a Person. The Word who was in the beginning is the Word who became flesh. He not only made you, He came to redeem you. And through Him, you are invited into a fellowship older than the stars and brighter than the sun.

Let us then bow in reverent worship, and gladly declare: He is Lord. He is Life. He is Light.
