My Treasured Possession

In seasons of discouragement or doubt, we may wonder if our faithfulness really matters—if God truly sees and values our devotion. But Malachi 3:17 offers a tender reminder of how deeply God cherishes those who fear Him. We are not forgotten. We are not unnoticed. We are His treasured possession.

Scripture:
“They will be my people,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “On the day when I act in judgment, they will be my own special treasure. I will spare them as a father spares an obedient child.” — Malachi 3:17, NLT

Reflection:
In a time when many in Israel had grown cold and careless in their worship, there was still a faithful remnant—those who honored the Lord, who spoke often with one another about His name (v. 16). And God took notice. He listened. He remembered.

Malachi 3:17 reveals God’s heart for His people. He doesn’t just tolerate the faithful—He treasures them. The Hebrew word used here, segullah, refers to a personal, prized possession—something set apart, not for common use, but for the joy of the owner. That’s how God sees those who fear Him and walk in reverence before Him.

And on the day of His judgment—the day He acts to set things right—He promises to spare them. Not because they’ve earned it, but because they belong to Him, just as a father spares his child out of love and relationship.

This verse looks forward to a day of reckoning, but it also speaks to our present identity. In Christ, we are that treasured possession. Titus 2:14 echoes the same language: “[Jesus] gave his life to free us… to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people.”

Application:
When you feel insignificant or unseen, remember this: you are God’s treasured possession. Let that truth quiet your fears and ignite your worship. Keep honoring His name, even when it feels unnoticed. Speak often of His goodness with others. He hears. He remembers. And He calls you His own.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling me Your treasured possession. In a world that often makes me feel small or unseen, remind me that I am deeply valued by You. Help me walk in reverence, to speak often of Your name, and to live in a way that reflects Your love. I belong to You—may my life honor that truth. Amen.
