Testing the Spirits

Not every spiritual voice is from God. John reminds us to be discerning, testing what we hear against the truth of Christ. The Spirit of God always points to Jesus as Lord, while the spirit of deception denies Him.

Scripture
“Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God.” — 1 John 4:1–3 (NLT)

Reflection
John’s readers faced confusion from false teachers who denied Christ’s incarnation. He makes the dividing line unmistakable: the true Spirit confesses that Jesus Christ came in the flesh; the spirit of antichrist denies Him. Every teaching must be measured against the truth of Jesus.

Believers are not left defenseless. John encourages, “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world” (1 John 4:4, NLT). The Spirit of God within equips us to discern truth from error and to remain firm in Christ.

While the world listens to its own voices, God’s children cling to the apostolic witness of Scripture. The Spirit of truth and the Word of God always agree.

Application
Be watchful about the voices you allow to shape your faith. Test what you read, hear, or see by the truth of Christ and the Word. Ask the Spirit to guard you from deception and to deepen your discernment, so that your faith rests securely in Jesus.
