Imitating What Is Good

In a world filled with selfish ambition and pride, John points to the beauty of a life marked by faithfulness and love. He warns against imitating what is evil and urges believers to follow what is good, for goodness reveals God at work.

Scripture
“Dear friend, don’t let this bad example influence you. Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God’s children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God.” — 3 John 1:11 (NLT)

Reflection
John contrasts two men in this short letter: Diotrephes, who loves power and refuses to welcome fellow believers, and Demetrius, whose life testifies to truth and goodness. One seeks control; the other reflects Christ.

This is a reminder that our actions reveal the reality of our faith. To do good is not to earn salvation but to show that we belong to God. As Jesus said, “By their fruits you will recognize them” (Matthew 7:20, NLT). The Spirit within us produces goodness, humility, and love, pointing others to God.

Evil, on the other hand, may sometimes wear religious clothing, but it cannot hide its roots for long. Pride, division, and a lack of love show that such a heart does not truly know God. John’s instruction is simple yet searching: don’t imitate evil, even if it seems powerful or successful—imitate what is good, because God is good.

Application
Look at the examples around you—whose footsteps are you following? Choose today to imitate what reflects Christ: humility, service, and love. Let the fruit of goodness show that you belong to God, and encourage others by being an example of what it looks like to walk in His truth.

References
“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.” — Romans 12:9 (NLT)

Prayer
Father, thank You for showing me goodness in Jesus. Guard my heart from pride and selfishness, and help me not to imitate what is evil, even when it seems easy or appealing. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my life may reflect goodness, truth, and love, giving glory to You. Amen.
