Paul’s words to the Galatians are not harsh—they are heartbroken. He sees people he loves drifting from the gospel, not by rejecting Jesus, but by adding to Him. They were tempted to secure their standing with God through effort, tradition, or performance.
“I am amazed how quickly you are deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel…”(Galatians 1:6, BSB)
And Paul says, “That is not the gospel.”
The gospel is not Jesus plus anything.
The gospel is Christ alone, received by grace, embraced through faith, and sealed by the Spirit.
Many of us face the same temptation. We may not return to ancient laws, but we often return to old habits of the heart:
• measuring ourselves by our performance,
• believing God is nearer on our good days than our bad,
• thinking we must prove ourselves worthy of His love.
But the gospel Paul defends declares something far more beautiful:
You are called by grace.
You are kept by grace.
You stand by grace.
What Christ finished, you cannot finish again.
What Christ secured, you cannot secure by effort.
What Christ gave freely, you cannot earn.
When Paul warns about “another gospel,” he is protecting the very source of our peace. Because any gospel that rests on you will eventually crush you. But a gospel that rests on Christ—that gospel gives rest, joy, and assurance.
Today, let these words settle into your heart:
Christ is enough for God.
Christ is enough for you.
Christ is enough forever.
Return to grace.
Rest there.
Rejoice there.
Because the gospel is not “do more.”
The gospel is “It is finished.”
