The First to See the Risen Lord

Sometimes God entrusts the greatest revelations to those who seem least likely to receive them. Mary Magdalene’s story is one of deliverance, devotion, and deep love. She followed Jesus faithfully when others turned away, and in her faithfulness, she became the first witness of the resurrection.

John 20:16–18 (NLT)
“‘Mary!’ Jesus said. She turned to Him and cried out, ‘Rabboni!’ (which is Hebrew for ‘Teacher’). ‘Don’t cling to Me,’ Jesus said, ‘for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find My brothers and tell them, “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.”’ Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, ‘I have seen the Lord!’ Then she gave them His message.”

Reflection
Mary Magdalene’s devotion was born out of deep gratitude. Luke’s Gospel tells us that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2). Her past was marked by darkness and bondage, but once set free, she never looked back. She followed Jesus from Galilee, ministered to Him, and stood near the cross when nearly everyone else had fled.

And then, on that quiet morning after the crucifixion, when grief hung heavy over the garden, Mary stayed. While others had gone home, she lingered by the tomb, weeping. It was there that the risen Savior spoke her name. What a moment—He could have appeared first to Peter, John, or any of the other disciples. Yet Jesus chose Mary. Grace has a way of finding those who stay near, even in sorrow.

Her story reminds us that God delights in transforming the broken into bold witnesses. Mary’s message was simple but world-changing: “I have seen the Lord!” That’s the heartbeat of every believer’s testimony.

Application
Like Mary, we’re invited to live in the reality of resurrection. Even in seasons of grief or silence, stay close to the presence of Jesus. When the world offers despair, remember that He still calls your name. Be ready to share your story of how Christ has met you—because someone needs to hear that hope is alive.

Prayer
Risen Lord, thank You for the grace that met Mary in her sorrow and called her by name. You know my name too, and You meet me in every place of confusion or loss. Teach me to stay near You, even when I don’t understand. Let my life bear witness to the truth that You are alive—and that Your resurrection power changes everything. Amen.
