The Foundation of Wisdom

We often chase insight, longing for guidance in life’s decisions and challenges. But the starting point of all true wisdom isn’t more information—it’s knowing who God is and responding with reverence. In a world filled with opinions, the book of Proverbs reminds us where to begin.

Proverbs 9:10 (NLT)
“The fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.”

Reflection
God doesn’t hide wisdom from us—He invites us into it. Yet the entrance is narrow. It doesn’t begin with experience, intellect, or education. It begins with fear—a holy awe and reverence for the Lord. This is not a fear that drives us away, but one that draws us near in humility.

When we recognize God as holy, sovereign, and just, we begin to see ourselves rightly. Wisdom grows as we submit our lives under His truth. In Jesus, this fear is transformed. The same God we stand in awe of is the One who welcomes us through His Son. Christ is not only our Savior—He is the embodiment of divine wisdom.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:24 that “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” The gospel doesn’t just save—it makes us wise. To know Christ is to walk in the knowledge of the Holy One. It is through Him that our judgment is transformed, our steps are ordered, and our lives are reoriented around truth.

Application
Pause today to consider where you’ve sought wisdom apart from God. Have you relied more on your own reasoning than on His Word? Bring that area before Him in prayer. Ask Him to renew in you a holy reverence—one that leads to trust and surrender. Let the wisdom of Christ guide your choices, your words, and your relationships today.

References
James 3:17 (NLT)
“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.”

1 Corinthians 1:30 (NLT)
“God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin.”

Prayer
Lord, I confess that I often lean on my own understanding. I want wisdom, but I forget that it begins with humility. Teach me to fear You rightly—not with terror, but with awe and surrender. Thank You for Jesus, who is wisdom itself. Shape my heart, renew my mind, and help me to walk in the fear of the Lord, today and always. Amen.
