Strength in Weakness

I often try to hide my weaknesses, instinctively covering the places where I feel most vulnerable. But in the kingdom of God, strength doesn’t come from self-sufficiency—it flows through surrender. Paul’s words to the Corinthian church invite us to a radical shift in thinking: that our most fragile places might actually be where God’s grace shines the brightest. It’s in the acknowledgment of our lack that the sufficiency of Christ becomes unmistakable.

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9–10, BSB)

Devotional Thought
Paul had pleaded with the Lord to take away a persistent “thorn”—some ongoing affliction or difficulty that remained unhealed. But instead of removal, God gave a deeper gift: grace that sustains, and power that doesn’t just show up in spite of weakness—but through it. This flips our natural desires on their head. We long to be rid of weakness. God longs to reveal Himself in it.

The gospel is not a call to perform or pretend—it is an invitation to rest in the sufficiency of Christ. When we come to the end of our own strength, we find a deeper well in Him. “My grace is sufficient”—not just barely enough, but overflowing, more than we need, moment by moment. And “My power is perfected in weakness”—not diminished by it. Our fragility becomes a canvas for His glory.

Jesus Himself chose weakness, taking on flesh, suffering, and even dying on a cross. The power of resurrection didn’t come by avoiding weakness but by walking through it. And now, His Spirit dwells in us, reminding us that we are not abandoned in our struggles. We are accompanied. Covered. Empowered. When we stop pretending to be strong, the power of Christ begins to rest upon us in real and freeing ways.

Application
Instead of hiding your weaknesses, bring them into the light of God’s grace. Don’t wait to feel strong before you serve, speak, or step out in faith. Trust that His power is already at work in your limitations. Let His grace be enough for you today.
