Why I Commend the Ministry of Desiring God
In an age of shallow spirituality and fleeting convictions, ministries that ground themselves in the Word of God and the glory of Christ shine as beacons for those who seek truth. Among such ministries, Desiring God stands out as one that faithfully and thoughtfully engages the heart and mind with a singular passion: to magnify the glory of God in all things through the joy He offers in Himself.
Their foundational message, often encapsulated in the phrase, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him,” echoes the timeless call of Psalm 16:11:
“You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (BSB)
This ministry masterfully directs our gaze away from fleeting pleasures and points us to the eternal satisfaction found in Christ. Through their teaching, they consistently remind us that Christianity is not a grim duty but a delightful treasure.
A Ministry Rooted in Scripture
Desiring God’s emphasis on the supremacy of Scripture resonates deeply with any believer who yearns to know God as He truly is. Whether through articles, sermons, or books, they center every effort on the Word of God. Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, they approach Scripture with diligence and reverence, urging their audience to do the same:
“Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.” (BSB)
This focus on Scripture ensures their teachings remain Christ-exalting, gospel-centered, and unflinchingly faithful to God’s revealed truth.
A God-Centered Vision of Life
One of the great strengths of Desiring God is their ability to show how God’s glory impacts every area of life. From suffering to parenting, from theology to vocation, they weave a tapestry that declares, “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof” (Psalm 24:1, BSB). Their resources teach believers how to live all of life for the glory of God, helping us see that our greatest joy is found in His supremacy.
Consider their treatment of Romans 8:28–29, where they explore God’s purpose in all things, including trials:
“And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose. For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.” (BSB)
In life’s hardest seasons, their teaching reminds us that God is shaping us into Christ’s likeness and that this purpose is not only for His glory but also for our ultimate joy.
A Legacy of Truth
Over the decades, Desiring God has influenced countless lives by providing rich theological teaching in a manner accessible to the everyday believer. They have never sought to entertain but to edify, always keeping Christ at the center. Their resources equip individuals, families, and churches to grow deeper in their knowledge of God and their experience of His love.
I personally had the privilege of helping amplify their message in a significant way. In 1995, I was the first to bring John Piper’s message to the Internet, making the truth he so passionately proclaimed accessible to a global audience in a way that was unprecedented at the time. This was a season when the Internet was still in its infancy, but even then, I recognized the potential of this new medium to carry such a vital message of God’s glory to the ends of the earth.
The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 3:8 seem to encapsulate the heart of this ministry:
“More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” (BSB)
Desiring God invites believers to embrace this same pursuit with wholehearted delight.
Commending the Ministry
In a world clamoring for our attention and allegiance, Desiring God steadfastly calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Their ministry is a gift to the Church, one that continually stirs up the affections of God’s people for their Savior.
If you have not yet benefited from their teaching, I encourage you to explore their vast resources. Let their ministry awaken your soul to the reality that the greatest treasure in life is knowing, loving, and glorifying God—because in Him alone is fullness of joy.
I am thankful to have played a small role in helping share their Christ-centered message in the digital age. Yet it is ultimately the message itself—the unchanging glory of God and the joy found in Him—that I commend to you today. May we all learn to desire God with the same fervor they inspire, for He alone is worthy of our hearts’ deepest devotion.
