Begin the Year with Remembering

As God prepared to deliver Israel from over 400 years of bondage in Egypt, He ordained that their calendar year begin with remembrance. The first month was to be marked by the Passover, a festival that commemorated their redemption. This was no mere memorial; it was a vivid proclamation of God’s mighty works and the cost of their salvation. The Passover lamb, the blood on the doorposts, and the unleavened bread spoke of deliverance, protection, and provision as they began their exodus to freedom.

“This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it is to be the first month of the year for you” (Exodus 12:2, NASB).

For the Christian, the foundation of the year—and indeed all of life—rests on an even greater redemption. At the cross, the Lamb of God laid down His life, shedding His blood to cover our sins. What appeared to be the pinnacle of helplessness was, in reality, the power of God for salvation. The One who spoke worlds into being achieved a cosmic victory at Calvary. Christ’s death secures our freedom, and His resurrection grants us life abundant and eternal.

As we step into a new year, God’s words to Israel echo across time: “This shall be the first month of the year for you.” Begin the year with remembering. Look back to the cross and reflect on the immense cost of your redemption. Remember the Lamb who was slain, the blood that covers you, and the sustenance God provides for your journey of faith.

This year is a gift from the One who redeemed you. Every day, every opportunity, every breath belongs to Him. Live it with your eyes fixed on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of your faith. Let the memory of your exodus from sin inspire gratitude and obedience. Your freedom was bought at a price, and your life now belongs to the One who made you free.

As Israel celebrated the Passover, they declared the faithfulness of God to each generation. Likewise, may we begin this year by proclaiming the glory of Christ’s work. Let us live in the freedom He purchased, not as a people enslaved to sin but as those who walk boldly in the light of His grace.

As you begin this year, pause to remember your exodus. Reflect on the cross, rejoice in your salvation, and resolve to live for the One who saved you.
