There is only one true gospel—the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. It stands as the unshakable truth of God, revealed in Scripture, and brings salvation to all who believe. Yet, in every generation, there are distortions, substitutes, and additions to this gospel. False gospels, like the so-called “social gospel” or “prosperity gospel,” may appeal to the flesh but ultimately leave souls empty. The true gospel, however, is eternal, unchanging, and sufficient for every spiritual need. Paul wrote;
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’” – Romans 1:16-17, NIV
The Heart of the Gospel
At its heart, the gospel is God’s revealing of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is about who He is and what He has done—truths that stretch from eternity past into eternity future. Jesus, the Messiah, is both fully God and fully man. Simeon, holding the infant Jesus in his arms, declared, “For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel” (Luke 2:30-32, NIV). This salvation, accomplished by Jesus, is the central theme of the gospel.
The gospel proclaims that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, just as the Scriptures foretold (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). It is the “everlasting gospel,” focusing on the Creator of heaven and earth (Revelation 14:6-7), the “gospel of the kingdom” that Jesus preached throughout His ministry (Matthew 4:23), and the promise of the coming King of kings who will reign forever (Revelation 17:14). At every point, the good news points us to Jesus as the Savior, Redeemer, and Ruler over all.
The gospel is also a gospel of grace.
Paul testified, “My only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace” (Acts 20:24, NIV). It is this grace that brings peace between sinful humanity and a holy God. Paul urges believers to stand firm, “with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15, NIV). For those who believe, this gospel becomes the “gospel of your salvation,” sealing them with the Holy Spirit and guaranteeing their eternal inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14, NIV).
What makes the gospel truly good news is its promise of eternal security. Jesus assures His followers, “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:28, NIV). It is a gift, not something we earn. John 3:16 declares, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (NIV). Salvation is not about what we do but about receiving by faith what Christ has already done.
Adding anything to this gospel is dangerous.
Paul’s warning to the Galatians could not be clearer: “Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!” (Galatians 1:8, NIV). The true gospel stands alone, unaltered by human ideas or traditions. It is, as Mark writes, “the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God” (Mark 1:1, NIV). This gospel, promised beforehand through the prophets, centers on Christ and His work (Romans 1:2-3).
This is the gospel that Jesus commanded us to preach to all creation. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:15-16, NIV). It is the glorious gospel of the blessed God, meeting every spiritual need for time and eternity. It is why Paul confidently declares, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16, NIV).
We need no other gospel, for this one is complete.
It reveals God’s righteousness, secures our salvation, and gives us peace, joy, and hope. May we cherish it, proclaim it boldly, and trust in its power to transform lives for the glory of God. Let us hold firmly to this gospel, knowing that it is, indeed, the only true gospel.
