Fear Not, For I Am With You

There are seasons when fear creeps in quietly—through uncertainty, suffering, or the unknowns ahead. But God does not leave His people to navigate the deep waters alone. In Isaiah’s words to Israel, we hear the voice of a loving Redeemer who names us, claims us, and walks with us through fire and flood. These verses don’t promise the absence of hardship—but they do promise the presence of God, which changes everything.

“Now this is what the LORD says—He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.’” (Isaiah 43:1–2, BSB)

Devotional Thought
God begins not with a command, but with a reminder: “I created you. I formed you. I have redeemed you.” Before He tells us not to fear, He anchors our identity in who He is and what He’s done. We are not nameless or forgotten. He calls us by name—because we belong to Him. And this belonging becomes the foundation for our peace, even when trials surround us.

The waters will come. The rivers will rise. The fires will burn hot. But none of these will separate us from the God who goes with us. These verses don’t dismiss the pain of life—they acknowledge it. Yet they also declare that no situation, no depth of suffering, no searing flame, is too great for His sustaining presence. We don’t walk alone. The same God who delivered Israel through the Red Sea and preserved them in the wilderness now promises to walk with us through our own trials.

In Christ, this promise takes on even deeper meaning. Jesus entered the waters of suffering Himself, taking on sin and death to redeem us fully. He is Emmanuel—God with us—not just beside us in comfort, but within us through His Spirit. So when we pass through fire, we can look to the cross and remember: He went through the worst of it to bring us safely home.

Application
Take courage today—not because your situation is easy, but because your God is near. Speak His promises aloud when fear rises. Remember who you are: redeemed, named, and held. You are His.
