Joshua 1:9 — Be Strong and Courageous

Fear can arrive like a storm—sudden, loud, and deeply unsettling. It stirs up anxious questions, shaky decisions, and a strong desire to retreat. King Ahaz found himself in such a moment. Two kingdoms had aligned against him, and the news shook him and his people “like trees of the forest shaken by the wind” (Isaiah 7:2). Into this fearful moment, God sends Isaiah with a surprising word—not a battle plan, but a call to calm.

“Say to him, ‘Calm down and be quiet. Do not be afraid or lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood…’” (Isaiah 7:4, BSB)

Devotional Thought

God does not belittle Ahaz’s fear—He addresses it with compassion and clarity. The enemies seem powerful, but to God, they are no more than burnt-out embers. What looks overwhelming to us is fully known and contained by Him. And so He speaks with fatherly tenderness: “Calm down. Be quiet. Don’t lose heart.” These are not empty platitudes—they are an invitation to faith in a God who sees beyond the threats.

What’s striking is that God offers this reassurance even to Ahaz, a king whose faith was weak and faltering. Grace speaks even when our hearts tremble. And ultimately, this chapter holds a deeper promise—the coming of Immanuel, “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14). Christ is the ultimate answer to every fear. In Him, we find not only calm for today’s threats but an anchor for our eternal peace. Because of Jesus, we are not ruled by fear, but held by love.

Application

The next time fear rises up, pause and listen to the Spirit’s quiet voice: Calm down. Do not lose heart. Fix your eyes on Christ, who is with you and reigns above every threat. Let His peace still your soul.

Lord, You see the fears that shake my heart. Thank You for speaking peace into my storms. Help me to trust Your voice above every threat and to rest in the calm only You can give. Be my quiet confidence, now and always. In Jesus’ name, amen.
