When the world is dominated by the proud and the powerful, it often seems that the arrogant will never be humbled and that the wealthy will never acknowledge a higher authority. Yet this verse declares a future reality where every human barrier to God’s rule will be removed. The imagery of the “fat ones”—those who are full, self-sufficient, and secure in their own abundance—bowing down signifies the ultimate submission of the entire world to the Lord. For believers who feel discouraged by the apparent success of the wicked or the indifference of the world to God’s claims, this passage offers a profound assurance: the day is coming when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
“All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and bow down; all who go down to the dust shall kneel before Him, even he who cannot keep his soul alive.” (Psalm 22:29 BSB)
The contrast between those who are “fat” (self-satisfied and prosperous) and those who “go down to the dust” (the poor, the dying, and the desperate) is striking. The psalmist asserts that both groups will eventually kneel before the Lord. The proud, who trust in their own resources, will find that their abundance cannot save them, and they too must submit. The broken and the dying, who have no strength of their own, will find their hope in Him. This universal bowing points directly to the exaltation of Christ. In the fullness of time, the Father has given Him the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The “fat ones” represent the kingdoms of this world, which will ultimately yield their power to the King of Kings. The one who “cannot keep his soul alive” finds life only in Him, for Christ is the Bread of Life who satisfies the hungry and raises the dead.
This vision of universal worship transforms how the church views the present age. The current resistance of the world does not negate the future reality of God’s reign. The local community of believers is called to live in the light of this coming day, proclaiming the gospel with confidence that the Lord’s victory is certain. Whether facing the arrogance of the powerful or the despair of the broken, the church can offer the same hope: there is a King who commands the allegiance of all, and in His presence, there is true life. The feast of the Lord, where the “fat ones” eat and bow, anticipates the marriage supper of the Lamb, where all who trust in Him will feast forever in His presence.
Application
Identify an area of your life where you may be relying on your own sufficiency or feeling intimidated by the power of the world. Bring this before the Lord, acknowledging that He alone is the source of true life and that every knee will eventually bow to Him. Pray for the humility to submit fully to His rule today, and for the courage to share the hope of His coming kingdom with those who are proud or despairing.
